Dancer & Dog Session – Railroad Park, Birmingham AL

I absolutely love this pair! I was very inspired by the Dancers and Dogs project for this shoot and I have been wanting to something like this for a long time. Baxter is a very sweet goldendoodle and Kellie is ballerina and instructor at Athletic Arts Center. I typically boast about how great I am at removing leashes in photoshop, but believe it or not this pooch was off leash the entire time and never even though about running away (thanks to his trainer!). We started off our session in the beautiful fields at Birmingham’s Railroad Park. The park has a lovely city backdrop too and we topped everything off with a few photos at the color tunnel when the sun set.

If you are a dancer or owner of a well-trained dog please contact me if you would be interested in future dancer and dog photo opportunities!

Preparing Your Dog for a Pet Photography Session

Out of the many dogs I have photographed I have found there are several things you can do to make your pet photography session run smoothly. Of course a bath and or grooming session is in order a night or two before the session so your pet looks his or her best! During the session, your average dogs tends to be extremely excitable as they are in a new environment and there are strange cameras and lights every where. Here are some of my tips for a smooth pet photography session:

  1. A tired dog is a good dog
You may not want to go to the dog park right before to avoid getting dirty but a good long walk can help tame down your dog’s energy levels before his or her photo shoot.
  2. Arrive hungry
If your dog is the least bit food motivated, let him or her arrive with an appetite and inform us of any favorite treats. Treats are one of the many tools I use up my sleeve to get a dog to look at the camera.
  3. Arrive early
It is a good idea to arrive on site about 30 minutes early so your dog can have a chance to sniff and explore all the new sites and sounds.

That’s it! At your session I always bring treats, toys, noise makers and water to keep your dog interested and comfortable. If you have scheduled your photo shoot in advance practicing sit and stay in unfamiliar settings is good prep and good practice any how for good doggy manners. I have endless patience for photographing dogs but if your pooch is set up for success we can achieve many more gorgeous photos during a one-two hour photo shoot.
